Year 9 Art Exhibition Brings Yayoi Kusama’s Art to Nadeen by Ms. Rien
In an impressive showcase of creativity and dedication, Year 9 learners recently transformed the school’s learning space into a vibrant tribute to the work of artist Yayoi Kusama. Inspired by Kusama’s unique style, the learners created artwork in various mediums, including coloured pencil, acrylic, graphite, pastel, and watercolour. The artwork primarily focuses on recreations and personal interpretations of Kusama’s eye paintings, reflecting her approach to colour, pattern, and repetition.
The exhibition also features a collaborative installation—a smaller version of Kusama’s ‘Obliteration Room’. This interactive art piece invites the community to become part of the art itself. At the inaugural opening ceremony, Year 9 learners welcomed parents and special guests, briefly introducing Kusama’s work and her inspiration behind the ‘Obliteration Room’.
“Getting to experience this event and adding this installation to the school, seeing the parents and learners getting involved has been very heartwarming.“

Initially designed in white, the room quickly became vibrant with colours as parents, learners, and guests added brightly coloured stickers, transforming it into a lively mosaic of shared creativity and expression.
“I like that we showed the children that art is not only drawing and we got to show everyone how Yayoi Kusama created her artwork. We started with white walls, and now it’s colourful.“

In addition to participating in the ‘Obliteration Room,’ parents and guests were invited to explore the surrounding art gallery, where the learners’ Kusama-inspired artwork is displayed along with thoughtful artist statements. These statements revealed each learner’s unique interpretation of the work and the creative processes behind their pieces. The event was a memorable experience, celebrating the beauty of collaboration, creativity, and the joy of community art.
